Life Matters
Lives and livelihoods depend on quality systems you will
probably never see, ships, roads and railtracks on which you may
never travel and distant production plants about which you've never
heard.
The Lloyd's Register Group is a risk management organisation that
works to enhance safety and to approve assets and systems at sea,
on land and in the air. We check that assets and systems work so
that people and communities around the world can get on with
everyday life. We are driven by a strong sense that what we are
doing matters.
These are the guiding principles that Lloyd's Register is founded
upon - both as an organisation and the individuals who work here.
And it's at the heart of our purpose. As a not-for-profit
organisation, we are driven by safety, not money. Life Matters is
how we express to the world what we stand for. It tells our
clients, those travelling and the community at large that we're
here with one unambiguous aim: to protect lives and the
environment.
Everyone at Lloyd's Register has a part to play, whatever their
role - whether they are the person who takes the call from the
client, the surveyor who does the work, the administrator who types
up the certificate, or the person who performs research and
development. We all do something that matters. Those who join our
team will too.
A diverse organisation
Our organisation is diverse, with some 6,000 employees in 240
offices worldwide. Across the Group many different languages are
spoken and many cultures are represented, but our people all share
a common commitment: to provide the best quality of service to our
clients. Global in outlook, our operations are driven by a strong
local focus with principal offices in Hong Kong, Houston and
London.
The best talent
We aim to attract and retain the best talent from around the
world. We like to appoint internally wherever possible and to
promote movement of people across the globe. In this way, we not
only increase and transfer knowledge to the benefit of our clients
but we also allow our people to gain valuable experience in working
in different markets and environments.
Investing in people
We are committed to investing in developing our people. We
recognise that this is essential to achieving and retaining global
technical leadership and to delivering benefits to our clients. In
2005/6 we increased our investment in learning, training and
development activities by 10% to £5.5m. We promote individual
learning both for employees and managers in technical and
managerial skills and monitor each individual's development through
our personal performance planning process and ongoing activity
monitoring.
"I am so proud to work for Lloyd's Register"
Jin Tae Lee Principal Surveyor & Area Manager for Koje and
Tongyoung, South Korea. With a PhD in naval architecture from Ulsan
University, JT joined Lloyd's Register in 1988. He has been
involved in developing our business in the shipbuilding, industrial
and LRQA sectors in Korea and in London. While in London, he and
his family travelled in Europe, developing an appreciation of the
different cultures and people.
"The opportunity to move to other areas of the business and to
another country for four years was an important and valuable
experience in broadening my global outlook. The Lloyd's Register
Group's Management Development Programme also opened my eyes to the
scope of our activities and gave me the tools and confidence to
manage the business and client relationships which are critical to
our success. As a returning Korean 'ambassador', I look forward to
leading my teams and passing on my knowledge."
"I've had the opportunity to develop my career"
Cecilia di Sciascio Finance Officer for Argentina and Uruguay. A
graduate in Business Administration from the University of Buenos
Aires, Cecilia joined us in 1999. We encouraged her to develop her
capabilities by undertaking quality training and, in 2001, she
passed the International Register of Certificated Auditors
examination and qualified as a lead auditor. Now in addition to her
finance and administration role, Cecilia works on many ISO 9000
audits for LRQA clients in the financial, services and insurance
sectors.
"Lloyd's Register has given me the opportunity to develop my
career. The knowledge I have gained in quality systems is a great
contribution to my daily work and helps me to improve the service
provided to clients. Our Group's People Management Programme has
strengthened my organisational skills and better equipped me to
deal with recruitment and problem solving."
