Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS)
What is EMAS?
The Eco-Management and Audit Scheme, known as EMAS, is a voluntary
EU directive designed to improve a company's environmental
performance. To register under this scheme a company must:
- implement an environmental management system which meets the
requirements of the EMAS Annex I (which is the same as
ISO
14001) and
- prepare a public environmental statement.
When you undertake EMAS, your company will also need to
demonstrate the following:
- compliance with legal requirements
- management of environmental impacts
- improved environmental performance
- dialogue with stakeholders.
These activities must be independently checked by an accredited
verifier such as LRQA.
Benefits of EMAS
The EMAS regulation is voluntary and available to all types of
companies located in the European Union and outside, although then
registration with the European Commission is not possible.
Companies that submit to the stringent requirements of an EMAS
management system and have their performance verified show a public
commitment to the environment and their corporate
responsibility.
If your company has an environmental management system certified
to ISO
14001 it has already covered some of the requirements of
EMAS.
LRQA's services
The dimensions to EMAS, management system and reporting, require
verifiers such as LRQA to be flexible to the different aspects and
to have a clear understanding of the issues and benefits that
clients seek in making information publicly available. To support
this, LRQA verifiers undergo further specialist training.
After successful completion of the LRQA verification and validation
assessment and the technical review, the client is issued with an
LRQA EMAS verification declaration and validation details.
