Project Title
Installation of an Energy Efficient Electric Arc Furnace at
Mahindra Ugine Steel Company Limited (MUSCO), Jagdishnagar,
Khopoli, Maharastra
Country
India
Project description
The project activity entails replacement of an existing energy
inefficient Electric Arc Furnace by installing new Electric Arc
Furnace (EAF) with the latest energy efficiency measures like high
efficiency supersonic oxygen injection system. The purpose of the
project activity is to improve the energy efficiency in the steel
melting process and thereby reduce GHG emissions associated to
energy use. Enhanced agitation in the EAF with increased oxygen
injection will significantly improve the gangue removal rate and
reduce the electrical energy consumption. Further, complete
combustion of the additional coke injected with the increased
volume of oxygen will increase the chemical energy input to the
bath and this will further reduce the electrical energy
consumption. In absence of the project activity, the energy
requirement of the existing electric arc furnace is met primarily
through grid electricity and a very small quantum of chemical
energy is introduced due to carbon combustion as the injection
oxygen was very less through a fixed manual oxygen injection
system.
The applied methodologies would be AMS IID Version 11 "Energy
efficiency and fuel switching measures for industrial
facilities".
The project is a Small Scale CDM project activity.
Crediting period is 10 years fixed and expected to start from
01/09/2008.
Estimated annual average emission reduction is 11,376 t-CO2.
The project PP is Mahindra Ugine Steel Company Limited (MUSCO) -
a private entity.
