Latest marine technical news publication Ice Focus

Lloyd's Register has published the latest edition of Ice Focus, a technical publication produced by Lloyd's Register exclusively for owners and operators of ships trading in ice and cold environments.

In this third issue of the publication:

• Winterising Prisco: The development and adoption of Lloyd's Register's winterisation Rules last year brought much needed standards to the construction of ice-class ships and is destined to streamline the commercial negotiating process for ship owners, according to the top technical officer at the Primorsk Shipping Corporation (Prisco).

• Viking XPRS: Viking Line's route between Helsinki and the Estonian capital, Tallinn, is to get a new ferry: Viking XPRS. She is the first ship that the Finnish owners have classed with Lloyd's Register, and also the first new ferry ordered by Viking Line since 1990.

• A ferry for all seasons: When the Åland Islands Government needed a new ferry to serve the island of Föglö, it stipulated that it had to be capable of navigating across one of the busiest ferry routes in the Baltic.

• Ice crews: Operations in cold environments present ships' crews with their own particular set of challenges.

• Materials at Low Temperatures - Has the industry got it right?

• New guidance for ice cruising: To navigate safely in ice not only demands that the ship meets the necessary design requirements, ships' staff must also acquire an entirely new set of skills.

• IACS Polar Ship Rules - Harmonisation of ice class: As more ships venture into ice covered waters, IACS has been moving to pull together the plethora of rules and guidelines.
