Lloyd's Register appoints Stephen Chan to drive global gas
ships strategy
Lloyd's Register Americas, Inc. appointed Stephen Chan as Global
Business Manager - Gas Ships. With 20 years of experience in the
liquefied-natural-gas (LNG) industry, Stephen will plan,
coordinate, and drive the Lloyd's Register Group strategy for
providing services to the gas-shipping segment. The Lloyd's
Register Group is currently the market leader in classification of
LNG ships with a 32% market share, classing 125 of the 394 LNG
ships in operation and on order today.
In the last decade, LNG growth has averaged 7.7%, outpacing the
international pipeline trade that averaged 4.7%. "LNG remains one
of the fastest-growing sectors in the energy industry, and one that
is essential for the world gas requirement," says Tim Protheroe,
Senior Vice President, Lloyd's Register Americas, Inc. "With
Stephen's appointment, we will further reinforce our market-leading
position in the LNG industry and be better able to assist our
clients, both in the Americas and globally, in responding to the
challenges and complexities of LNG ships." Lloyd's Register was the
first classification society to help clients develop a practical
approach to using safety cases for qualification of cutting-edge
technologies such as reliquefaction plants, dual-fuel,
diesel-electric propulsion systems, and novel LNG-delivery systems,
including the regasification technology that facilitated the import
of LNG into the US.
Stephen's vision for the Lloyd's Register Group's LNG-segment
services is to give clients assurance that every practical step has
been taken to protect the operator and the environment.
"Transporting LNG by sea requires dedicated engineering techniques
and contingency measures to minimise the risk inherent in the
carrying of this hazardous cargo. Building and maintaining a
liquefied-gas ship to the classification requirements of Lloyd's
Register allows our clients to place a high level of confidence in
the safety of their ships and cargo," he says.
Stephen joined the Lloyd's Register Group in 2007 based in
London and has recently relocated to Houston, Texas, where he will
direct the organisation's global LNG strategy and work to further
enhance the Group's capabilities in the Americas. He started his
career as a seagoing engineer on LNG ships, was appointed
Superintendent Engineer overseeing the operations of LNG ships,
then managed the tender process for the construction of new ships.
At a shipyard in Japan Stephen oversaw the building of new vessels
and then was promoted to Site Manager before joining MOL Tankships
in 2003 as the Fleet Manager and part of the pioneer team that
established the company's LNG-ship-management office in London. He
oversaw the delivery of four LNG ships built in Korea and Japan and
ensured smooth integration of the ships into the service fleet.
Stephen holds an MBA and is a Fellow of the Institute of Marine
Engineering, Science and Technology and a Fellow of the Royal
Institute of Naval Architects.
