Type approval
Independent verification of products
Purchasers of products need to be confident that the vendors and
suppliers they select are capable of providing the required
standard of components.
A Lloyd's Register Type Approval mark on your products provides
your clients with an assurance that your claims have been
verified.
What is Lloyd's Register Type Approval?
Lloyd's Register Type Approval is an impartial certification
service, which is available for a wide range of products used in
marine and offshore applications, industrial plants and processes,
and the IT sector.
- It provides unbiased, third-party verification of your
product's conformity with your specification, and national and
international standards.
- It assists in ensuring an appropriate level of product safety
is achieved, inspiring confidence among your clients.
- It enables you to use the Lloyd's Register Type Approval mark -
a special symbol of approval on packaging, in your promotional
material or on the product itself.
Type approved products are listed in the
Lloyd's Register List of Type Approved Products.
What are the benefits?
- Type Approval gives your clients confidence that you can
provide the required standard of components.
- The scheme is more cost-effective than continuous direct
inspection of major products.
- It leads to fewer delays and reworking requirements and sets
standards for a lower-risk approach to the supply of products
intended for ship construction.
- Type Approval raises awareness of key issues and best-practice
benchmarks in emerging manufacturing countries and helps to improve
product quality.
How does Lloyd's Register help?
There are five stages for gaining Lloyd's Register Type
Approval:
1. We review the design data you submit to establish that it
complies with specific codes or specifications.
2. We examine test reports on a representative sample to confirm
its compliance with the claimed performance.
3. We inspect your production controls to ensure that your product
is manufactured in accordance with the design data.
4. We then issue a Type Approval certificate, normally valid for
five years, and authorise you to use the Lloyd's Register Type
Approval mark.
5. Finally, we enter your product in the relevant part of our List
of Type Approved Products.
