Materials and NDE services
Helping to ensure quality
You need to be confident that the materials you use in your ship
will perform satisfactorily throughout its life. Lloyd's Registers
materials and non-destructive examination (NDE) services can help
you meet this goal.
What are materials and NDE services?
We offer a wide range of services relating to materials
procurement and manufacture, their use in construction and repair,
and their in-service performance. These include:
- advice on manufacturing procedures, methods and controls
- consultancy/advice in corrosion, metallurgy, non-destructive
examination, welding and composite (FRP) materials
- mechanical testing to determine properties of metals, plastics
and composite (FRP) materials
- laboratory and on-site investigations of metallurgical
failures
- material approval schemes, covering items such as plates,
forgings, castings, welding consumables, paints, resins, etc.
- service supplier approval schemes
- training in materials, welding, NDE and fibre reinforced
plastics.
What are the benefits?
- Laboratory investigations enhance safety by identifying causes
of failures and providing recommendations to prevent
re-occurrence.
- Approval schemes give confidence that the selected vendors and
suppliers are capable of providing the quality of product
required.
- Using our services can help prevent problems before they occur
eliminating the need for costly rectification work.
How does Lloyds Register help?
Consultancy services
We have specialists with knowledge covering many aspects of
materials technology. They benefit from engineering back-up from
throughout Lloyds Register and support from our in-house materials
laboratory, ensuring that we can provide you with the most useful
advice whenever you need it.
Approval schemes
Our material approval schemes lay down defined procedures that
help ensure that the materials procured for your ship are delivered
to pre-agreed and verified quality standards. They help prevent
production delays and losses caused by rework or replacement of
inferior materials used during construction, and improve confidence
in the through-life performance of your ship.
The schemes are based on a combination of clearly defined
requirements, direct and indirect inspection, and periodic
re-approval. They cover all key components, including steel and
aluminium plates, sections, bars, pipes and tubes, castings,
forgings, propellers, anchors, chain cable, welding consumables,
paints and plastic materials. Approved suppliers can easily be
found by logging on to ClassDirect Live and searching the approvals
database.
Training
We run comprehensive training programmes relating to materials
and NDE which can be tailored to your specific needs.
