Technical investigations
Evaluating risks, identifying solutions
Offering you the best advice and assistance for when the
unexpected happens, or you require in-depth technical support.
What is the technical investigations service?
Lloyds Registers technical investigation service provides
engineering assessment and evaluation from concept to operations
identifying and understanding problems, determining the scale of
potential losses involved and providing customised solutions.
To assist your future operations we clearly document our
investigations. We supply reports identifying what was done and by
whom, the reason for the modifications and the overall outcome of
our input. We also identify the technical methodologies that have
been involved and recommend recovery options to allow informed
business decisions to be made. Continuing our involvement provides
you with access to advice and practical support, and the on-going
benefit of our experience.
What are the benefits?
- We offer rapid solution of your technical problems, and reduced
risk of re-occurrence. This helps to minimise downtime or off-hire
time.
- Undertaking a technical investigation provides the potential
for performance improvements through proactive application of
investigative research to other vessels in your fleet.
- Working with Lloyds Register gives you access to
industry-recognised specialists who have experience across the
ships lifecycle and across the many disciplines involved, including
marine, mechanical, electrical and naval architectural
engineering
How does Lloyd's Register help?
We have a broad range of expertise and knowledge including:
Failure investigation and fault diagnosis
Diagnosis of faults and rectification to reduce the risk of
re-occurrence. Benefits include:
- helping to minimise the amount of time off-hire
- the potential for performance improvements through proactive
application of lessons learned to other vessels in your
fleet.
Hydrodynamics
Specialist input to help you to optimise the hydrodynamic
performance of your ship design and avoid problems with inefficient
propulsion, unacceptable cavitation, high levels of noise and
vibration, and in extreme cases, hull and propeller damage.
Our experience also enables us to offer you practical solutions
should you encounter any of these problems during service.
Noise and vibration
Independent, impartial noise and vibration investigations of
machinery and structures, using a combination of full-scale
measurement and theoretical methods. These enable us to isolate the
cause of the problem and evaluate the technical merits of potential
solutions.
Analytical investigations
Lloyds Register has expertise and experience in a wide range of
analytical techniques and tools, which can be deployed as part of
an investigation, or made available directly to clients. These
include computational fluid dynamics (CFD), finite element analysis
(FEA), modal analysis, noise prediction, and engine simulation.
Full details can be found on our analytical investigations
factsheet.
Trials and measurements
Lloyds Register can provide a range of services during
commissioning and sea trials to help optimise your ships
performance and lower your technical risk and improve
performance.
Shaft alignment and shafting system analysis
Using a combination of practical experience, theory and testing
we are able to provide rational solutions to alignment problems
both during construction and in service. We also offer an
integrated approach to shafting system analysis, isolating possible
causes of failure and identifying optimum design, redesign or
maintenance recommendations
