Managing risks and improving performance

Lloyds Register carries out ISM certification on behalf of more than 60 flag administrations. Since the Code was introduced, we have been at the forefront of developments in its interpretation and implementation, leading in the provision of innovative and cost-effective certification and support services.

The International Management Code for the Safe Operation of Ships and for Pollution Prevention (ISM Code) is a management systems model designed to encourage safety and pollution prevention. Compliance is mandatory for passenger ships and other ships of 500 gross tonnage and upwards engaged on international voyages, although individual flag administrations may add to these minimum requirements.

In general terms, the Code requires that safeguards be established against the safety and pollution risks involved in shipboard operations. Responsibility for this is placed firmly on the companies charged with the ships management.

Implementation of the ISM Code helps you to achieve greater operational efficiency and can lead to a reduction in losses arising from accidents and pollution incidents.

In-house training

We provide training on all aspects of safety management in the form of a co-ordinated suite of courses designed for use at all levels of your organisation. Topics range from general familiarisation for non-specialists to detailed treatments of risk management and the development and administration of documented management systems. Courses can be adapted to particular requirements, and are all delivered by experienced, practising auditors.
