Lloyd's Register Americas acquires Martec, strengthening global
marine consultancy services
Lloyd's Register Americas Inc. has concluded the acquisition of
Martec, an engineering firm based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Martec
specialises in developing advanced engineering simulation
technology for the design and analysis of complex structures and
systems - particularly ships, ports, harbours, and offshore
facilities. A pioneer in its field, Martec has delivered practical
solutions to difficult engineering problems for over thirty
years.
Martec's activities will be part of the Lloyd's Register Group's
Marine Consultancy Services, co-ordinated by Claus Myllerup, Senior
Vice President, Head of Lloyd's Register Technical Investigations
& Analysis.
Myllerup, commenting on the acquisition says, "Bringing Martec
onboard is the latest development in a strategic plan to strengthen
our marine consultancy capabilities. Martec's strong research and
development capabilities will make a strong contribution to the
Lloyd's Register Group. With its multidisciplinary consulting
services, engineering analysis software, and contract research
services, Martec provides solutions to structural, materials and
environmental problems using advanced engineering, finite element
and computational fluid dynamics methods. Martec's strength in
defence related work will provide important support to the Lloyd's
Register Group's expansion in its naval services.
"Martec has worked closely with the Royal Canadian Navy and
Canadian Coastguard from its inception. From enhancing blast
protection for military personnel and vehicles, to predicting the
motions and stresses of ships in waves, or developing new methods
for predicting structural fatigue, Martec has the expertise and
experience to mitigate risk, and enhance performance while
improving safety and survivability."
Magnus Wollström, previously based with the Lloyd's Register
Group in Sweden, has been appointed Managing Director of Martec and
has moved to Halifax to take up his new role. He says, "This is a
tremendous fit for the Lloyd's Register Group, Martec gives us
access to a highly qualified team of engineers with extensive
experience in structures and computer analysis. Integrating Martec
with our existing consultancy operations will offer many
opportunities for us to strengthen our service delivery to both
naval and non-naval clients."
Tim Protheroe, Senior Vice President - Americas Marine Business,
comments, "Martec has been focused on the North American market.
Integrating Martec with Lloyd's Register's global business will
provide many opportunities to support our global operations and, at
the same time, immediately provide Martec with a bigger playing
field and wider horizons. We are looking forward to working with
Martec."
Ends.
