Yara ready to roll out Lloyd's Register Capstone inspection
package
Yara International ASA has chosen a solution from Lloyd's
Register Capstone, Inc. to implement a risk-based inspection (RBI)
system at facilities throughout the company. In recent years Yara
has tested different available tools for risk-based inspection
(pilot sessions in Porsgrunn, Sluiskil, and Ferrara) and even
developed and implemented its own RBI tool in Le Havre. The final
conclusion: RBMI (Reliability Based Mechanical Integrity) from
Lloyd's Register Capstone is the best solution.
RBI is a departure from the traditional system, in which site
and equipment inspections are imposed by outside authorities and
are based on local regulations that often vary between countries.
"Authorities tell you what, when, and how to carry out inspections,
but without detailed knowledge of an installation. RBI is an
inspection philosophy that is knowledge- rather than
regulation-based. In the inspection world this is a big step
forward," explains Arie de Bruyne, Head of Mechanical, Yara Project
Office Brussels.
Now Yara has opted for a forward-looking approach that sets an
industry example. The RBI approach optimizes inspection intervals
based on risk ranking and inspection methodologies based on
degradation factors like corrosion and cracking. The RBI approach
on static equipment will mean increased safety and reliability, as
well as reduced maintenance costs thanks to preventive, instead of
corrective, actions.
"Now this process is a team effort from production, maintenance,
and inspection - bringing the knowledge of all three together. In
isolation you could have an upset in operations - which might cause
trouble later - escape detection. With this increase in combined
knowledge you have a thorough overview of what has happened in a
plant," says Arie.
RBMI has a certified link with SAP and is a complete tool,
offering inspection plans and planning, a database for data
collection and risks ranking, and an inspection data management
system. The first wave of implementation is synchronized with the
planned major turnarounds of Tringen 2 in Trinidad, the Urea plant
in Ferrara, and Nitric Acid 7 plant in Sluiskil.
The contract was a major project, carried out by Berd Klipps
from IT, Einar Omli from Purchasing, Frank de Vogelaere, Arie de
Bruyne from Maintenance and Inspection, cooperating with Hendrik
Everaert, Jan Heerings, Serge Teulings, and Christine Buelens,
Director of METALogic, from Lloyd's Register EMEA.
