Notified Body
Notified Bodies are appointed by members of the European Union to
carry out conformity assessment against European Directives. For
rail, these are Directive 96/48/EC Interoperability of the Trans
Europe High Speed Rail System and Directive 2001/16/EC for the
interoperability of the conventional European rail system.
How we can help
Lloyd's Register, through its subsidiary companies Lloyd's
Register Verification Limited and Lloyd's Register Nederland B.V.,
has been appointed as a Notified Body for the Interoperability of
the European Railway System Directives which means we are
recognised throughout the European Union. Our notification covers
all sub-systems and interoperable constituents including :
- Infrastructure
- Energy
- Control, command and signalling
- Rolling stock
- Maintenance
- Operation.
Our work leads to the compilation of a Technical File and
ultimately to a Certificate of Conformity.
We offer a one-stop shop to achieve certification using our
multi-disciplinary teams of specialists and can also provide advice
on whether Notified Body certification is required for a
project.
In order to ensure that we continue to perform Notified Body
Certification work to a high standard we are regularly audited
against the principles of EN45011 (Bodies operating product
certification systems) and EN45012 (Bodies operating assessment and
certification/registration of quality systems).
Complimentary to our role as a Notified Body is the work we
undertake as a Competent and Designated Body which includes acting
as a
Vehicle Acceptance Body (VAB) in UK.
What are the benefits?
- Our reputation for independence and integrity gives you and
your stakeholders confidence in the conformity process and ensures
that the necessary standards have been met in a robust and
demonstrable manner.
- Our approach to Notified Body certification is to work with our
clients and give constructive and objective feedback throughout a
project allowing them to achieve conformity in an efficient
manner.
Recent projects
- We acted as the Notified Body for a major upgrade to
infrastructure on the UK West Coast Mainline by the Trent Valley
Alliance. Our appointment included assessment of the command,
control and signalling subsystem against the High Speed Directive.
We were involved in assessing the alteration and re-location of
signalling equipment on the fast lines. This was achieved through
review of design details, signal sighting forms and testing and
commissioning plans followed by a series of site inspections.
- We certified 80km of new 300km/h rail infrastructure for the
Dutch High Speed Line South (HSL) against the High Speed Directive.
This is a new line to Belgium and includes 170 bridges and viaducts
and several tunnels.
