Lloyd's Register awards ISO 14000 to BW Shipping
Lloyd's Register has awarded ISO 14000 certification to BW Shipping
Managers Pte Ltd for its entire managed fleet of tankers and bulk
carriers. ISO 14000 is an internationally recognised standard which
indicates that a company has mitigated its environmental risks.
Lloyd's Register Asia's Singapore Office conducted the audit
leading to the certification.
"BW Shipping is not only one of the world's largest ship
operators, it is also one of the market leaders for risk management
and environmental awareness. The company is setting an excellent
example at a time when the shipping industry as a whole and the
tanker sector in particular is coming under enhanced scrutiny from
regulators and the public at large," says John Curley, Marine
Manager for Singapore and Southeast Asia, Lloyd's Register
Asia.
BW Shipping is also one of the first companies to have committed
its fleet of 18 tankers and six bulk carriers to the auditing
regime required for obtaining the Green Passport. The Green
Passport, as laid out in the International Maritime Organization's
Guidelines on Ship Recycling, is a document which contains an
inventory of all the materials onboard a ship which may be
hazardous to human health or to the environment which should
accompany the ship throughout its operational life. When a ship
comes to the end of its operational life, the Green Passport can be
used by the ship recycling yard to dismantle the ship in an
environmentally friendly manner.
BW Shipping's ongoing fleet planning encompasses all
environmental aspects of ship operation, and BW Shipping has also
asked Lloyd's Register to approve the ballast water management
plans for its entire fleet in accordance with IMO requirements.
This approval will lead to the awarding of Lloyd's Register's
Ballast Water Management Plan Descriptive Note.
"We are fully committed to minimising the impact of our
operations on the environment, and Lloyd's Register has been a
valuable partner in helping us to do this," says Andreas
Sohmen-Pao, Managing Director of BW Shipping Managers Pte Ltd. "The
maritime transport of raw materials and goods is a vital element of
global commerce. We are keen to perform this service in a manner
which preserves the maritime environment."
Ends.
