BRC/IOP global food packaging standard
What is the BRC/IOP food packaging standard?
The British Retail Consortium (BRC) and the Institute of Packaging
(IOP) together created a global food packaging standard. It can be
applied by manufacturers and converters packaging which will be
used by the food industry. Although developed in the UK, the
standard is acknowledged internationally.
The BRC and IOP (Institute of Packaging) have developed this
Standard to assist retailers and food manufacturers in the
fulfilment of their legal obligations. This Standard will help in
the protection of the consumer by providing a common basis for the
audit of companies supplying packaging for food products to
retailers.
Benefits of the BRC/IOP food packaging standard
Manufacturers have an obligation to put appropriate systems and
controls in place to ensure the suitability of their packaging for
safe food use.
The BRC and IOP have developed this standard to assist retailers
and food manufacturers in the fulfilment of their legal
obligations. It aids the protection of the consumer by providing a
common basis for the audit of organisations supplying packaging for
food products to retailers.
LRQA's services
LRQA provides food sector inspection and support services to food
packaging manufacturers and suppliers needing to comply with the
requirements of this standard. The BRC/IOP service includes
evaluation visits and certification.
An LRQA assessor who meets the qualification requirements of the
BRC/IOP conducts the evaluation visit to identify how effectively
the requirements of the standard are being met by the manufacturer
or supplier. When your organisation satisfies the requirements,
LRQA issues you with a certificate of approval.
Evaluation visits can be combined with other LRQA services such
as ISO
9001 assessment and surveillance visits.
