The Lloyd's Register Educational Trust is an independent charity operating throughout the world. It was established in 2004 by the Lloyd's Register Group.

The Group's Constitution requires it to enhance the safety of life and property at sea, on land and in the air. Further, it requires the organisation to support public education within the transportation industries, engineering and technological disciplines. For many years, it has made funds available for this purpose. However, in 2004, it decided to bring a sharper focus and greater professionalism to its charitable work and set up The Lloyd's Register Educational Trust ( The LRET) to fund advances in transportation, science, engineering and technology education, training, and research worldwide for the benefit of all.

The LRET is wholly funded by the Lloyd's Register Group. However, once the Group has made a donation to The LRET, it has no direct say how it is used. That decision is taken by The LRET's own Board of Trustees, with guidance from its full-time Director, Michael Franklin.

The LRET funds activities in four categories that form a continuum of support for people from a very young age:

  • pre-university education - engaging school children

  • university education - supporting students studying for a first degree or doing a postgraduate course

  • vocational training and professional development - supporting people in work who are enhancing their knowledge and skills

  • research - funding fundamental industry research programmes at existing or new 'centres of excellence' at universities and academic institutes.

Fulfilling the requirements

Given that the objectives of The LRET are broad, there are a number of criteria that have to be met for it to be able to function effectively.

Firstly, as a general rule, The LRET cannot deal directly with individuals in any of its four categories. It neither has the resources nor, in a lot of cases, the expertise to make this viable. Rather it funds specialist organisations that run programmes that involve individuals.

The LRET prefers to fund programmes of activity and work over a three to five year timeframe, rather than one-off events or projects, helping to establish and develop strong initiatives that will become self-sufficient or be able to find alternative funding after the initial period of support. Regardless of the impact of a programme of work, LRET funding cannot be guaranteed to continue indefinitely.

Very importantly, The LRET works to encourage organisations with similar aims to work together and share best practice, rather than to operate independently. In this way, it hopes to encourage the efficient use of available resources both within a country and in different regions of the world.
