Abstract

The lecture will set the scene in terms of the energy challenges of the 21st Century: unprecedented population growth; interesting geopolitical dynamics; mankind's increasing impact on the planet's ecosystem; meeting rising expectations and coping with resource depletion in a world of ever increasing energy demand. The prospects for a significant and growing contribution of nuclear generated electricity will be discussed in the context of increasing confidence in the sector's ability to deliver safe, secure, economically competitive systems internationally, together with maturing views on perceptions of risk, waste management and decommissioning. Current and recent examples will illustrate the points made. The UK's late awareness of security of supply and infrastructure refreshment issues in a free market economy will be highlighted as will the confidence that new nuclear reactor deployment can play a major role in the future UK generating mix and present major opportunities for UK companies and engineers in the global industry.
