University education
LRET supports high achievers in science, engineering and technology with a view to helping them become tomorrow's leaders in their chosen field.
In this category, we are looking to support high achievers in science, engineering and technology with a view to helping them become tomorrow's leaders in their chosen field. As with the previous category, we aim to allocate 20% of our available funds to this area.
Again, we are not generally able to deal with individual students. We work with selected universities, colleges and other academic institutions around the world that offer suitable studies for undergraduates and postgraduates and which are able to administer scholarships, including selecting and monitoring students, or award schemes on our behalf. In the case of undergraduates, scholarships are not available for the first year of study but may be awarded on the basis of excellent results and proven commitment at the end of the first year.
Purpose: to help high-achieving science, engineering and technology undergraduates and postgraduates reach their full academic potential by providing funds to universities and other suitable educational institutions for scholarships, awards and the provision of relevant courses. University education.
Scope: worldwide.
Duration: variable, but usually up to three years.
Examples of our funding
WORLD LEADERSHIP FORUM, UK
The World Leadership Forum organises the annual Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) Student of the Year Awards. This is an award scheme for final year students studying for a first degree at UK and Eire universities. Students can only be entered by their lecturers and must be expected to receive a first class degree. Entrants are required to submit written details of a project they have worked on. Initial judging is done online and a shortlist of three finalists is drawn up. Each finalist has to attend an interview with the judges before a winner is selected. The award scheme has some 17 categories and awards are presented at a high-profile 'Oscars-style' event in London. It has been successfully running for some 10 years and the LRET sponsors the Maritime Technology category. We hope to take the scheme to other countries, starting with the USA and Canada in 2009.
THE UNITED STATES MERCHANT MARINE ACADEMY, USA
The United States Merchant Marine Academy, in New York, is a world-class educational institution that runs courses that equip men and women for sea-going careers and for future service ashore in the maritime industry. It approached the LRET for funding for an online Master of Marine Engineering program. The LRET agreed to support this course on the understanding that appropriate students from any country were permitted to enrol. We also part-fund the software for an LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) Simulator at the Academy to give students experience of operating highly complex gas ships.
