What did you do before you joined LR?
I joined the LR 'Graduate Training Scheme' after completing my Masters. Before going to university I worked for a medical filter company improving their manufacturing processes.
How has your career developed since you’ve been at LR?
In my first two years with Lloyd’s Register I received training of the highest class. I spent on average 3 months in a location before moving in to a new challenge. Through this programme I learnt the different parts of the business first hand and built up an extensive network of colleagues. Most of these placements were in European Lloyd’s Register offices but I was also seconded to a ship builder and the crew of an oil tanker. I am now working in the USA as a field surveyor ‘on development’ where I will remain for the next two years.
How has LR supported you?
The training programme I have undertaken was extremely thorough. I am sure other organisations would have curtailed it to maximise profit but I genuinely believe training is important to LR and I feel supported as a young professional.
What are the main reasons you’ve stayed at LR?
I love the diversity of the work and the pressures of ensuring high levels of safety are maintained. Our motto “Life Matters” is not just a catchy strap line it underlines everything we do and you actually experience this mentality when you work here.
What do you see as your next role or career opportunity at LR?
I came to work in the Miami office because I wanted to improve the safety of passenger ships. By the end of 2012 I hope to be fully qualified as a field surveyor and after that the best passenger ship surveyor in the world!
