I’m Hongyan Lu, a surveyor in the Design support office in Shanghai, China and I joined LR in August 2006.

As one of the surveyors working in DSO (Design Support Office), the main task is to appraise the submitted plans according to rules, regulations and procedures and also to supply our technical support for clients with specialised and detailed service.
With the booming shipbuilding market, many more orders have been achieved by LR in China within the past few years. Consequently our office faces more challenges from clients, e.g. design companies, shipyards and ship owners, since our service is an important aspect which affects their decisions about which class will be chosen.
The hull section of SDSO in which I work is a united and vigorous team. Technical workshops and team briefings help everyone to exchange their ideas easily and enhance our knowledge.
LR enables staff to work in other overseas offices through short-term or long-term international assignments whereby LR people can receive different professional training from specialists with high ability. Our internal staff mobility supports people from different countries to work within one team which facilitates exchange of technical knowledge.
I was able to benefit from a short term international assignment when I moved to London for 5 months in 2009. I had a good time and got to know the experts in my technical domain. I believe this career experience will contribute to my future career development.
The on job training I have received has also enabled me to achieve technical progress. My training has been mainly focused on Bulk Carrier market since I joined. In subsequent years, I will be aiming to enhance my knowledge of tankers and strengthen my knowledge of bulk carriers.
Aside from the on job professional training, I have benefited from LR’s complete training system so my Personal Development Programme has included Project Management and Train the trainer skills.
