SOLAS

Helping you meet requirements as regulations change

As a result of amendments to SOLAS 1974 a major retroactive requirement will be introduced in October 2010 that will impact on passenger ships. As part of our ongoing support for the passenger industry, we offer a service which will help owners and operators determine what is required on each of their ships to ensure that they maintain compliance.

Understanding the impact on older vessels

The 1992 and 2000 SOLAS amendments will have a significant effect on passenger ships engaged on international voyages built before May 25, 1980. The owners of these ships will need to verify that their ships comply with these amendments before they are allowed to trade beyond 2010.

Ships will already have complied with those requirements which have entered into force to date. But owners of many older vessels may not be aware of their ships' current level of compliance with the remaining requirements, and the work needed to bring these ships up to the required standard.

We have pioneered a new service to help owners of passenger ships obtain the necessary information and to assess the impact of these requirements on their vessels.

The service has been developed following a modular approach, with complementary modules examining different aspects of the ship.

Independent assessment

The following modules are available:

  • Module 1 involves an assessment of the ship's plans and an onboard survey of the service spaces, accommodation etc. to determine the extent of compliance with the SOLAS amendments.

  • Module 2 involves an assessment of the condition of the structure.

  • Module 3 assesses the machinery and electrical and control engineering systems.

You can choose one or more of the modules depending on the information you need. Armed with this information, you will be able to make informed decisions regarding the cost of upgrading your ship and its future financial viability.
