BS EN 16001

Energy management is a fundamental area of focus across all sectors of industry. Implementing a BS EN 16001 certified energy management system can save you money and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

What is BS EN 16001?

Energy management is a fundamental area of focus across all sectors of industry. Implementing a BS EN 16001 certified energy management system can save you money and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

BS EN 16001:2009 details requirements to enable you to develop and run a system, identifying high energy usage areas and targeting reductions in those areas for increased energy efficiency.

CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme

BS EN 16001 is of particular use if your organisation is subject to the Government’s CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme (formerly known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment or CRC).

The CRC now allows verification of carbon emission reduction via schemes alternative, but equivalent, to the Carbon Trust Standard to count as an Early Action Metric.

So, if required, when we assess against BS EN 16001, we can also check how well your systems meet the additional key requirements that should allow you to comply with the Early Action Metric under the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme.

For consideration as an Early Action Metric, we can reference the additional checks in your BS EN 16001 assessment report, which you should then submit to the scheme organisers, together with verified data proving your emissions reduction of ≥2.5% over three years.

Benefits

  • Costs cut

  • Emissions reduced

  • Productivity improved

  • Compliance improved

  • Policies formalised

  • Systems integrated (optional)

  • Energy security risks reduced

  • BS EN 16001 feeds into work on the future international management system standard for energy, ISO 50001, which is currently in development by ISO and due for publication in late 2010 or early 2011.

A key priority in the development of ISO 50001 is to ensure compatibility with BS EN 16001, so transition is straightforward and no disincentive for BS EN 16001 certified organisations.

ISO 50001 will provide organisations with an international framework for integrating energy efficiency into their management practices, including procurement and use.  Multi-nationals will benefit from a single, harmonised standard to implement across their organisations with logical and consistent methodologies.

LRQA Services

LRQA was the first certification body to achieve a full scope of accreditation to ISO 14001 from the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).  Developing our BS EN 16001 service capability was a natural extension to this, as we are already accredited to provide GHG emissions verification across 18 European countries and rapidly extending this worldwide.

Certification - We can assess and provide certification to BS EN 16001.
Combined assessments - along with assessing against BS EN 16001, we can also check how well your systems meet the additional key requirements that should allow you to comply with the Early Action Metric under the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme.
Training - that will help you to understand how to implement BS EN 16001 into your organisation.
