Marco Sepulveda, an LR-sponsored Engineering Doctorate student with the Industrial Doctorate Centre for Offshore Renewable Energy (IDCORE), is based in our Aberdeen office under the supervision of Dr Mark Spring and Prof Peter Davies.  Marco’s Doctorate, which he will complete next year, focuses on wind turbine reliability.  In recent months, Marco has presented papers and posters at a number of major industry conferences in collaboration with LR.

Most recently, at the American Wind Energy Association Offshore conference (AWEA Offshore), LR’s Marco Sepulveda presented a poster, “Risk assessment of an offshore wind turbine and development of a physics of failure based approach to estimate the remaining useful life (RUL) of the power converter”.  You can download the poster here.

In September 2016, Marco led a workshop on risk management & assessment at the BIS offshore wind O&M forum.  This included guiding participants through a practical wind turbine FMEA.  Topics discussed included opportunities for cost reduction, common technical failures and vulnerabilities, issues for project insurance and reducing overall cost of energy.
