Harnessing the oil and gas sector's hunger for innovation

The oil and gas sector, characterised by complex technology, relies on a continually renewed innovation pipeline.

As part of the Technology Radar series, Lloyd’s Register Energy has been examining the future evolution of innovation in the sector – and the most effective routes to successful deployment. In this panel discussion, John Wishart, President of Lloyd’s Register Energy, Neil Kavanagh, Chief Technology Officer at Woodside Energy and Denis McAuley, Director of Longitude Research and formerly of the Economist Intelligence Unit give their perspectives.

Recalling a recent executive briefing event hosted by Lloyd’s Register Energy in Abu Dhabi, which was attended by representatives from industries such as Aeronautics, Silicon Valley and Medicine, John Wishart said, “People are looking beyond their own sector - they've actually gone out and sourced technology in other areas to see how they can apply it to their own. The other thing that intrigued me was that other industries look to the Technology start-ups: putting funding into those organisations can drive quicker solutions because, in-house, it's more of a function, more of a job; whereas start-ups - it's their whole being.”
