Lloyd’s Register, in conjunction with the UK P&I Club, have developed the ILO MLC Pocket Checklist in both a conventional format and, for the first time ever, a smartphone app, to help ship operators comply with the Convention’s requirements and reduce the risk of port state control detentions.
The International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006 was introduced to help ensure that all seafarers, regardless of their nationality and the flag of the ships they work on, can enjoy decent working and living conditions. The MLC was ratified in August this year and will enter into force in August 2013.
The pocket checklist app is an interactive tool that enables ships’ crews and their managers to view the requirements of the ILO MLC and check off required activities as they are completed. The app is available for free for iPhone, iPad and Android devices; it will soon be available for Windows phone and BlackBerry as well.
LR has now produced six pocket checklists in a series that address regulatory compliance requirements. They have been highly popular with the marine industry worldwide.
You can download the smartphone and tablet app now on the App Store and Google Play. It will be available on the Windows Store and BlackBerry AppWorld soon. To download the relevant version of the app for your device go to www.lr.org/mlc. Hard copies of the checklist can be ordered from www.webstore.lr.org.
