Research leads to successful innovation.
Our major commitment to research is that our profits help to fund the Lloyd’s Register Foundation which supports research programmes in universities worldwide to fulfil part of its mission – the advancement of engineering education and research. Find out more about the Foundation's key areas of research.
LR's key areas of research include work to ensure that the Rules are always up to date. These set standards for the design, construction and maintenance of critical infrastructure ranging from ships to offshore units and land-based installations. We use our extensive knowledge and expertise in the transport and energy sectors to introduce new Rules when new technologies are developed. This helps our clients to continue to innovate safely.
The Southampton and Singapore GTCs are conducting research into a wide range of areas related to shipping and energy.
We also join other bodies to conduct research. For example last year we published the influential the Global Marine Technology Trends 2030, a report based on two years of research into the future of the maritime industries undertaken with Qinetiq and Strathclyde University.
