Ice and cold operations
Providing services for the cold-climate shipping
community.
Ice and cold operations comprise three principal elements:
- the ice and cold regime
- the ship operations
- the ship.
Lloyd's Register provides services to the ice and cold-climate
shipping community in all three elements. We can tailor our
expertise to suit individual client requirements for ice and cold
operations, providing an optimised solution for ships operating in
harsh environments.
What is our experience?
Our classification services - from specification, through design
approval, to construction and in-service survey - continue to
benefit the rapidly expanding ice and cold operations market.
We have over 80 years of experience in the design, construction and
operation of ships for cold climates. Our experience covers:
icebreakers, crude oil and product tankers, LNG carriers,
sophisticated double-acting tankers, tugs, offshore supply vessels,
bulk carriers, container ships, multi-purpose ships, and ro-pax
ships.
Innovation and technology
Tempera and Mastera are the world's first
double-acting tankers. These 105,000 dwt ice-classed tankers are
classed by Lloyd's Register with notation Ice Class 1AS.
These vessels are examples of our expertise in diesel electric
propelled and podded propulsion systems, suitable for operation in
ice.
Innovative cold-climate designs such as these need detailed
appraisal. To help ensure that ships will withstand the harshest
environments, we provide advice and assistance at every stage, from
design scenarios and risk assessment, to more specific support such
as review of direct calculation procedures.
Ice and cold operation rules
We have a complete rules package that covers all ice and cold
operations:
Ice class
Lloyd's Register's first-year ice class rules have recently been
aligned with the Finnish-Swedish Ice Class Rules methodology. The
IACS Unified Requirements for Polar Class Ships come into effect in
March 2008.
Winterisation
Many of the features fitted to ships to combat icing and low
temperatures are in addition to ice-class requirements. They are
often based on the operational knowledge and experience of
particular owners and builders, and can be dependent on a ship's
arrangement, trade route and size.
In order to capture and standardise this knowledge, we have
developed winterisation rules. Applied to new designs, the rules
provide a standard of protection against cold temperatures and the
effects of icing on ship operations.
