Lloyd’s Register Capstone software recertified to API 580 standard
03/03/2010
API 580 certification demonstrates advanced knowledge and expertise in the area of risk-based inspection.
Certification reflects a commitment to industry best practices for risk-based inspection of fixed assets
The Capstone fixed equipment criticality engine, version 7.9.0.584, was recently assessed under the relevant requirements of the American Petroleum Institute’s (API) Recommended Practice 580 and recertified as compliant by exida Certification. The fixed equipment criticality engine calculates the probability and consequence of failure for a range of equipment types, which then produce a recommended inspection plan, including method, extent, and frequency for a risk-based inspection program. API 580 certification demonstrates advanced knowledge and expertise in the area of risk-based inspection.
Lloyd’s Register Capstone currently has the only software product certified to the standard by an independent third party. “By applying our extensive experience in helping clients implement efficient and cost-effective risk-based inspection programs, Lloyd’s Register Capstone not only developed the first software to manage the full cycle of risk-based inspection, we have demonstrated that our software conforms to industry best practices,” says Efrain Garcia, Chief Operating Officer for Lloyd's Register Capstone. “This recertification validates our ongoing commitment to driving technical innovation for the increased safety and reliability of fixed assets.”
Rather than implementing a traditional fixed interval inspection program, a risk-based inspection program allows operators to focus their inspection and maintenance efforts primarily on high risk components, with fewer resources devoted to low risk equipment. Lloyd’s Register Capstone is the industry’s first fully integrated, risk-based, inspection software package to manage inspection programs for pressure vessels, piping, storage tanks, heat exchangers, relief devices, subsea structures, pipelines, and user-configurable assets. The Capstone system generally requires 50% to 90% fewer inspection points than a traditional inspection program while reducing the risk of failures by 80% to 95%.
“Lloyd’s Register Capstone's fixed equipment criticality engine was originally certified to API 580 in September of 2006. As part of this assessment exida looked at both the implementation of API 580 as well as the software development process followed by Lloyd’s Register Capstone,” says Iwan van Beurden, Senior Safety Engineer at exida Certification. “As part of Lloyd's Register Capstone’s continuous-improvement process, several modifications were made to the fixed equipment criticality engine over the last couple of years. exida reviewed these modifications and the artifacts created as part of the development process. Based on documents provided and the development process followed, exida concluded that the fixed-equipment-criticality engine is still in compliance with the API 580 standard.”

Celebrating 250 years of service
In 1760, 11 men met in Edward Lloyd’s coffee house to talk about publishing a list of ships, a register to define their quality and safeguard life and property carried on them. In the years since then we have applied our expertise across the energy and transportation sectors, helping to make the world a safer place. In 2010 we are celebrating 250 years of service and quality, and we are looking forward to the new challenges the future brings.
