T2IMS: train-based monitoring system

Good asset management requires reliable, up to date information about the condition of assets and their use. How we can help
In cooperation with various other companies, we have developed the on-board Train Track Interface Monitoring Systems (T²IMS), an advanced train-based measuring system for detecting and making train and track related measurements. Using the system we can support asset management programmes, carry out analyses, perform data mining and generate real-time warnings and notifications.
The system has the following key features:
• Accurate real time data is transmitted to a central server
• Track position, train location, energy usage and tracking of low adhesion can be measured
• It can be configured to measure particular train-related parameters required by a client
• Measurements are made automatically without affecting the train operation
• Advanced digital data analysis translates measured data into client information such as defect reports, maintenance advice, energy charge and other reports.

Recent projects
We carried out a pilot project for Dutch infrastructure manager, ProRail, with a view to replacing measuring vehicles and periodic visual inspections with the T2IMS system. The system was fitted on board a passenger train along with a GPS positioning device in order to evaluate track geometry. When defects are detected by the system, reports identifying the nature and location of the defect are transmitted from the train to a base station. Currently, plans are being developed for a broader roll-out of the T2IMS system across the NS Dutch Railways fleet.
