Safety engineering
With extensive knowledge of current trends and technological developments across the industry, we advise operators and infrastructure aboutall aspects of safety. We have particular expertise in train control and protection systems, ERTMS and ETCS, and also provide strategic advice on ATP systems.
Our industry leading team of safety, RAMS and EMC engineers advise operators and infrastructure controllers about all aspects of safety in the rail environment.
We have particular expertise in train control and protection systems, ERTMS and ETCS. We also provide strategic consultancy on pre-implementation preparation and tailor made solutions for ATP systems.
How we can help
With knowledge that spans across the rail domain and class-leading safety expertise, we offer a range of safety services including:
Engineering safety case management.
Preparation of safety assurance strategies and plans to ensure that systems are compatible.
Achieving safety acceptance.
Hazard identification and analysis; Hazard Log Management.
Quantitative and qualitative risk assessments of new and existing systems.
Analysis and specification of safety requirements.
Safety critical systems, engineering and integration.
Technical investigations.
Examination of electro-magnetic compatibility and its effect on safety.
We offer a recognised Notified Body team authorised under article 10(2) of the European Commission Directive EMC 2004/108/EC.
Signalling and control
To help develop appropriate train control and protection systems and implement them efficiently we can provide:
Advice on migration strategy and planning from national legacy systems to ERTMS
Preliminary studies to determine which ATP configuration is the most suitable for implementation
Comprehensive feasibility analyses for the installation of rolling stock safety systems
Advice on procurement strategy, tender preparation and contracting.
What are the benefits?
Our approach allows you to focus on running your business while we address the definition and implementation of your key safety engineering systems. Working with your team, we provide the specialist knowledge and resources to deliver the optimum solution, whilst balancing performance, costs and risk in support of your business objectives.
Recent projects
Class 395 Safety Case
Our team developed the whole vehicle safety case for Hitachi (compatibility and safety file) and obtained the authority to operate from the infrastructure managers and other railway stakeholders. This included:
• Hazard identification and management of the hazard log for the whole vehicle, this used our web-based hazard log and client portal
• Developing safety cases on a system by system basis and ultimately for the whole train
• Cost Benefit analysis
• Compatibility with EE&CS infrastructure
• RAM assessment and demonstration
Class 22x Safety Case
We undertook the safety assessment of the Class 220, 221 and 222 train fleets for Bombardier. This included hazard identification, hazard analysis and safety case development which saw all three fleets enter test and passenger service.
Al Sufouh Transit System
Lloyd’s Register provided safety engineering expertise for the assessment of the Al Sufouh Transit system including rolling stock, power supply system, maintenance depots and infrastructure.
HSL-Z (HighSpeed Line South)
We supported Infraspeed with the implementation of ETCS on the Dutch HSL-Z (HighSpeed Line South).
Class 465 Traction Replacement
We provided the safety compatibility arguments to demonstrate that the new traction system is compatible with the infrastructure signalling system and included:
• Hosting and managing Hazard Identification meetings and managing web-enabled Hazard Log for the project
• Demonstration of compatibility with EE&CS assets
• Submission of Compatibility File
Safety Engineering for Washington Dulles Airport
We provided safety engineering expertise to assess the design, maintenance and operation of the Dulles Airport people mover system. This included:
• Assessment of power system design
• Depot layout, safety systems and maintenance procedures
• Communications systems
Class 465 Route Extension
Undertook the risk assessments and safety engineering for the Class 465 route extension to Farringdon, providing the compatibility file and Independent Competent Person support to the Train Operator.
Regenerative Braking
We provided the safety compatibility arguments to demonstrate that the operation of the regenerative brake on several classes of EMU is compatible with the infrastructure power and signalling systems.
