Lloyd's Register has been awarded with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Government of Dubai for our work on the construction of the Dubai Metro. Mike Elliott, who led our project team throughout, was invited to attend the ceremony and receive the award from His Excellency, Mattar Mohammed Al Tayer, Chairman of the Roads and Transport Authority.

The opening of Dubai Metro’s Green Line in September marked the completion of one of our most challenging rail assignments to date. The Metro, which now extends over 75kms, is the first urban train system built in the Arabian Peninsula and currently the world’s longest driverless railway.

We have been closely involved with this project from the very start, having been appointed as the Independent Safety Assessor for the railway during detailed design in 2006. The Lloyd's Register team numbered anywhere between three to more than 30 people operating at any time from our site office next to Union Station, with expertise bought in from our UK, Asia and European businesses as required to meet the deadlines.

"The safety assessment of the Dubai Metro project was both a challenging project and an enlightening experience for our team. It took the highest levels of co-operation between consultants, contractors, operators and clients to deliver this safety assessment," Mike Elliott, Project Leader for Lloyd's Register, said. "It was a privilege to be part of this and we are proud to be associated with this prestigious project."

As many as 30 experts from the organisation worked on the project at any given time, with technical expertise bought in from the Group's Middle East, UK, Asia and European businesses to ensure the project’s strict deadlines were met. One of the biggest challenges for the team was Dubai's climate, which presented one of the most hostile environments in which an urban metro has ever been constructed. With year-round temperatures ranging from +1°C to +52°C, solar radiation levels of up to 780 W/m2 (the average is 250 W/m2), wind speeds reaching 160 km/h blowing sand and dust, and a corrosive atmosphere containing high levels of salt, ensuring appropriative and sustainable standards of safety during construction and operations was of paramount importance.
