Clean Shipping Index verification

Independent verification of your environmental performance.

The Clean Shipping Index has been developed by the Clean Shipping Project to rate the significant environmental impacts of shipping. It is used by cargo owners to rank the environmental performance of ships or shipping companies.

The Clean Shipping Index has been developed by the Clean Shipping Project to rate the significant environmental impacts of shipping. It is used by cargo owners to rank the environmental performance of ships or shipping companies.

As an operator, you can choose to have the information you enter on the Index’s database independently verified. Lloyd’s Register can provide this service. Verification is the only way to obtain a ‘good performance’ rating and this is clearly identified to cargo owners.

What is the Clean Shipping Index?

The Clean Shipping Index rates the environmental impacts of shipping, such as emissions to air and water, the use of chemicals, and the effects of anti-fouling systems. It is used by cargo owners to rank operators and their ships according to the aspects that are most relevant to them.

How does it work?

Ship operators enter information describing their ships’ environmental performance into the Clean Shipping Index database. The database then calculates a score for each one.

The items it covers include:

  • carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions

  • SOx emissions

  • NOx emissions

  • waste and water, including ballast water management, and garbage and sludge handling

  • chemicals, including anti-fouling systems, biodegradable oils and refrigerants.

Independent verification from Lloyd’s Register

Operators can choose to have the data they submit to the Index verified by a third party. Verification is required for a ship to attain a ‘good performance’ rating.

Lloyd’s Register can provide this verification.  The service is based on best practice and delivered by teams made up of Lloyd’s Register surveyors and Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) auditors.

The verification process requires an audit of the ship. To minimise cost and inconvenience, we can do this audit in conjunction with other onboard Lloyd’s Register inspections.

We have carried out verifications for Maersk Line, Wallenius Marine and Rederi Transatlantic.

About the Clean Shipping Project

The Clean Shipping Project won the Green Shipping Initiative of the Year at the Sustainable Shipping Awards 2010. More information on the Project and the Index can be found on their website here.
