SEEMP services

Helping you manage fleet efficiency and reduce fuel consumption

Our SEEMP services support you in developing your Plan and provide confidence that it meets requirements, helping you proactively manage your ship’s energy efficiency.

CO2 emissions from shipping will be controlled through new IMO legislation which comes into force on January 1, 2013. From this date, all ships over 400 gt will be required to have a Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP).

The SEEMP is a management manual that can assist shipowners in reducing energy consumption through specific energy improvement measures, including best practice.

Our SEEMP services support you in developing your Plan and provide confidence that it meets requirements, helping you proactively manage your ship’s energy efficiency.

What is a SEEMP?

A SEEMP contains ship-specific energy improvement measures identified by the shipowner.

SEEMPs are ‘live’ documents and should be reviewed regularly to assess the impact of the measures on ship and fleet operations and to make sure they remain relevant. Though each ship’s SEEMP will be
different, all Plans will contain similar themes and best practice and should also link to a broader corporate energy management policy.

In some cases, the SEEMP may form part of the ship’s Safety Management System (SMS). Many shipowners will also have an Environmental Management System (EMS) under ISO 14001 which will contain relevant environmental improvement practices that may augment the SEEMP.

Development support

Our SEEMP supporting material (template, checklist and guidance notes) will help you prepare your own SEEMP. In addition, we can assist you in developing the SEEMP with support which can be tailored to your individual needs, covering:

  • regulatory background and requirements

  • best practice tips and industry guidance

  • implementation of specific energy efficiency measures and their applicability to your ship
training of staff (office and ship-based).

Review

Our review service helps ensure that your requirements are captured within the SEEMP as an achievable and practicable set of processes to reduce fuel consumption and improve efficiency. The service includes:

  • independent review against regulatory guidance on SEEMP

  • alignment with best practice including industry guidance

  • assessment against existing corporate environmental policy and targets (e.g. ISO 14001)

  • assessment of technical and operational measures including proposed implementation and practicability of assigned tasks

  • attestation of the reviewed SEEMP.

SEEMP requirements

Each SEEMP should be structured using a simple ‘plan > do > check > act’ approach, as follows:

Plan: Identify each energy improvement measure.
Do: Define tasks for implementation with delegated responsibilities.
Check: Monitor the progress of each measure and put in place appropriate benchmarks and reporting processes.
Act: Each measure should be evaluated periodically to assess its effectiveness.

The process should be continuous and evolving, and include goals where appropriate.

A SEEMP requires proactive management. A well-planned and documented SEEMP can be the key to success. In most instances it will require shore-based staff to manage the SEEMP process in order to prevent increased workload and excessive paperwork for crew on board.

Industry requirements

Having a SEEMP is already a requirement under some charter party contracts and this means it is vital to have clear management plans that demonstrate efficient fleet operations. Lloyd’s Register works with clients around the world and is well placed to understand the needs and objectives of operators in this respect.

Adding Value

Through independent assessment, we help ensure your SEEMP covers all the key aspects relating to operational and technical management, reporting and monitoring, and goal setting, planning and review. This provides you with peace of mind and the best chance of success in improving energy efficiency for your ships.
