Lloyd’s Register Type Approval is an impartial certification service providing independent third-party Type Approval certificates attesting to a product’s conformity with specific standards or specifications, and verification of an appropriate production quality system. Marine Equipment Directive and Mutual Recognition type approval certification is also available

It is based on a design review and typetesting or, where typetesting is inappropriate, a design analysis. There is growing international awareness of the importance of third-party certification.

Why Type Approval?

Our Type Approval is available for a wide range of products for use in marine and offshore applications, industrial plant and processes, and the information technology sector. There are many benefits for producers and users.

Lloyd’s Register Type Approval:

  • provides unbiased, third party verification of a product’s conformity to the producer’s specification, and national and international standards

  • assists in ensuring an appropriate level of product safety is achieved, inspiring user confidence

  • enables producers to use the Lloyd’s Register Type Approval mark on their products – a special symbol of approval on your packaging, in promotional literature or on the product itself, which can be used for all products credited in the Type Approval certificate.

How can I obtain Type Approval?

Briefly, there are five stages to gain Lloyd’s Register Type Approval:

  • we review the design data submitted by the producer to establish that the design complies with specific codes or specifications

  • we witness tests on a representative sample in accordance with a programme agreed between the producer and us to confirm compliance with the claimed performance

  • production controls are inspected to confirm that the product is manufactured in accordance with the design data

  • we issue a Type Approval certificate, normally valid for five years and authorise use of the Lloyd’s Register Type Approval mark

  • the product is entered in the relevant part of the Lloyd’s Register List of Type Approved Products.

Summary of benefits

  • Provides confidence that the selected vendors and suppliers are capable of providing the required standard of components.

  • The scheme is more effective than continuous direct inspection of major products.

  • Leads to fewer delays and reworking requirements.

  • Sets standards for a lower risk approach to the supply of products intended for ship construction.

  • Identifies the causes of sub-standard products by working with suppliers to review and redress root causes.

  • Raises awareness of key issues and best practice benchmarks in emerging manufacturing countries and helps to improve product quality.
