What is our experience?
Lloyd's Register has extensive tanker experience with over 1,000 crude, products and chemical tankers in class, equating to about 22% of the existing world fleet (based on tonnage).
Notable firsts for Lloyd's Register include:
classing the first double hull VLCCs to be constructed in both Europe and Asia
classing the first ULCC to be constructed for over 20 years in 2002
classing the worlds first double acting, ice class 1AS, tanker to be constructed.
How can Lloyd's Register help?
At the new building pre-contract stage
Since 2008 Lloyd’s Register has been assisting owners from the concept design phase of Tanker projects through to final contract specification discussions with shipyards as part of consultancy where vessels will ultimately be classed to Lloyd’s Register standard. This is tailored to meet the needs of individual clients where they need support to their technical and commercial teams. This is becoming ever more relevant now with the onset of eco friendly and fuel efficient designs and a need to have higher technical specifications to future proof the operation.
New plan and checklist to promote safer ship-to-ship oil transfers at sea
New requirements to MARPOL Annex I, regulating STS transfers, came into effect on January 1 2011, and we have produced a plan and checklist to help operators to comply with MARPOL regulations governing the transfer of oil at sea, while meeting best-practice standards for safety and environmental protection. Ship-to-ship (STS) oil-cargo transfers at sea are a common feature of the tanker trades, and preventing spills and helping to ensure safety has long been an industry priority.
Common tanker Rules and harmonisation
Lloyd's Registers leading role in the development of the Common Structural Rules for Double Hull Oil Tankers as a member of the LAN Group and now as a leading Society in the harmonisation of the Common Structural Rules means we are ideally positioned to assist from our wide experiences. In support to the Common Tanker Rules we have an expert network across our design support and local offices. In addition in we have a number of surveyors placed in Asia to support the implementation of the harmonised rule sets. We also have a range of training courses, which provide you with an understanding of the Rules and how to apply them, as well as their use in the Lloyd's Register software tools, RulesCalc and ShipRight Structural Design Assessment (SDA), which have been updated to expedite their application and streamline the approval of new designs. In the near future our software and training for the harmonised Rules will be completed and ready for release.
Condition Assessment Programme
Tankers that are 15 years of age or older require a CAP (Condition Assessment Programme) certificate in order to maximise their earning potential. Our Condition Assessment Programme involves assessment of your vessels hull structure, machinery and cargo systems and leads to the award of a Lloyd's Register CAP rating. A ship which has been through the programme and achieves a high CAP rating is easily identifiable as being well maintained, with many benefits for both operator and charterer.
Tanker Management and Self Assessment (TMSA)
The Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF), through its best-practice guide Tanker Management and Self Assessment (TMSA), has challenged tanker owners and operators to evaluate their approach to the ISM Code, to improve their management systems and to demonstrate a strong commitment to safety and environmental excellence.
We can help you identify how well your existing management systems comply with the elements of the TMSA guide and advise where improvements can be made. All management systems can be reviewed and regularly assessed at agreed intervals to determine the current status of compliance against the guidelines. In addition we have a portfolio of products and services which can help you improve your TMSA stage rating.
