Marine Environmental Protection Committee IMO MEPC - March 2010

Outcome and opportunities

The anticipation ahead of the 60th IMO MEPC meeting (March 22 – 26, 2010) was that it would discuss and agree matters in relation to greenhouse gas (GHG) emission control, MARPOL and the Revised Manual on Oil Pollution.

The GHG debate took up a large amount of the agenda and a number of member states registered their opposition to the agreement on the EEDI and SEEMP and the MBM Expert Group. There remain a number of challenges for the Committee in relation to GHGs. However, the Committee demonstrated international leadership and sent a clear signal to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change that IMO can and will deal with the climate change challenge in relation to international shipping.

This note briefly sets out the main outcomes of the meeting and their consequences. For detailed information, please contact your local Lloyd’s Register office.
