ISO 8217:2010 FAQs

ISO 8217:2010 FAQs

The ISO 8217:2010 Standard, the development of which FOBAS has been heavily involved, represents a significant advance over the previous 2005 version and has prompted widespread debate within the shipping industry and the fuel supply community. The changes which have been incorporated into this 4th edition of the Standard are designed to promote the safer use of marine residual and distillate fuels recognising the fact that the industry is entering into a new realm of multi-blend products driven by ever increasing environmental regulation. Furthermore, users are provided with better protection against the supply of poor quality fuels.

FOBAS advises clients to ensure the benefits of the ISO 8217:2010 Standard are applied to their fleets by taking a close look at the Standard to determine where changes need to be made in bunker/charter clauses. We hope that the following questions and answers will provide you with a deeper understanding of the new Standard.

Additionally, the supporting Standard, ISO 8216, dealing with the classification of marine fuels, has similarly been updated to reflect the changes to ISO 8217.

This FAQ is by no means exhaustive and therefore if you find you still have further questions or require clarification on any aspect of the Standard please do not hesitate to contact FOBAS on fobas@lr.org.
