Marine Environmental Protection Committee IMO MEPC - September 2010

Outcome and opportunities

It was anticipated that the 61st IMO MEPC meeting (September 27 – October 1, 2010) would  discuss and agree matters in relation to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the MARPOL, Ballast Water and Recycling Conventions.

The GHG discussions were wide-ranging and constituted over 50% of the MEPC’s Plenary debate. Despite the challenges, the Committee continued to demonstrate international leadership and maintain its message to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change that IMO can and will deal with the climate change challenge in relation to
international shipping.

This note briefly sets out the main outcomes of the meeting and their consequences. For detailed information, please contact your local Lloyd’s Register office.
