A hot topic

Our work with the nuclear industry is a good illustration of our full lifecycle involvement

Our projects encompass advising on the decommissioning of the first-generation nuclear power stations as well as the construction of the new wave of power plants that are being planned and built around the world.

Our projects encompass advising on the decommissioning of the first-generation nuclear power stations as well as the construction of the new wave of power plants that are being planned and built around the world. In 2009 our technical competency and knowledge was recognised with the award of a contract for a series of technical services under the framework agreement for the UK’s Nuclear Installation Inspectorate. The technical services – including internal hazards, probabilistic safety analysis and management for safety and quality assurance – relate to the generic design assessment for the UK’s new-build nuclear reactor programme.

Lloyd’s Register has led the way on verification solutions for the nuclear industry, providing expertise and knowledge to assess duty holder schemes and monitoring structure management. This level of thought-leadership approach includes technical assessment work, which also helps harness best practice in guiding regulation.  We have been associated with over 85 nuclear projects worldwide.  Our UK nuclear involvement began in the 50s with the Calder Hall reactors, through being the independent Third Party Inspection Authority for Sizewell B. Today we provide services across the full nuclear fuel cycle.
