Metocean Web Application

VesMet: Analyse voyage metocean conditions.

Lloyd's Register's VesMet web application allows qualitative assessment of metocean conditions experienced throughout a voyage, by intersecting actual or planned vessel tracks with an extensive database of global hind-cast metocean data.

Metocean Database

Global metocean data is published at 1 and 3-hour intervals respectively by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the US and in Europe by Copernicus, the European Union’s Earth Observation Programme.

Both services are widely used in maritime and offshore energy sectors and update large and complex dynamic global metocean models, which uses data from satellite, airborne, seaborne and ground measurement systems.

LR downloads the models hourly and the constituent parameters are decoded and stored within LR’s cloudhosted metocean database, with spatial resolution of up to 0.083. As of January 2020, 7 years of hind-cast metocean data is now available for any offshore location globally.

Vessel Tracks

Vessel positions and tracks can be loaded to VesMet to create Voyages using a number of methods, including drag and drop of CSV or Excel files, or by drawing the Voyage directly onto the web map using mouse point and click. The start date/time of a vessel track can be offset to test different Voyage schedule scenarios. LR's IRIS project users may additionally select to load vessel positions directly from their existing IRIS project databases.

Sparse position datasets are interpolated providing vessel position datapoints at consistent intervals across a Voyage duration, typically every hour.

Site Location Feature

Any offshore Site Location may be selected as a reference location. This feature allows the metocean conditions experienced on the vessel to be directly compared with those modelled for the site location.

Project status

Where the daily and hourly operational / activity status for the vessel is available, it may be loaded to help assess the vessel’s operational performance against the metocean conditions experienced (e.g. operational, standby, transit etc).

Data Displays

The selected Voyage is presented as a vessel track within a web map window and plotted above a digital nautical chart or LR’s Global Reference Basemap.

Up to 3 metocean parameters such as Significant Wave Height, Tidal Current and Wind Speed may be selected. This data is loaded and presented as time series plots across the Voyage time frame for both the Vessel Location and the Site Location.

VesMet facilitates close interaction between the map and time series plots, allowing point and click query at particular times or locations.

For each selected metocean parameter, a pie chart component tests the data against a user entered threshold.

Offshore Surveys

VesMet is ideal for use with offshore energy sector projects such as, seabed surveys, site investigations, cable lay and trenching and is an invaluable tool both before and after the project.

The user first generates an expected Voyage Plan from mobilisation via site location to demobilisation. The Voyage can then be ‘test-run’, commencing at any date/time combination over the past 7 years. With the metocean-related thresholds entered for the vessel, e.g. 2.5m Significant Wave, VesMet calculates how much weather standby would have been experienced. This can help with both schedule planning and pricing, based upon what would have been experienced in previous months or years.

Following the completion of the project, the actual Voyage is loaded and the as-experienced conditions for the vessel track, and Site Location, can be presented, assessed and analysed. Where the project operational status is also loaded, the user can efficiently identify all weather standby periods across the metocean record for the Voyage and assess how well the vessel performed against expectation.

Over time, the user achieves a qualitative understanding of the relative weather performance of a range of vessels and the likely impact of using each on any particular project schedule.

API Service

VesMet communicates with its cloud-hosted database using a fully documented Application Programming Interface (API). Using this architecture, LR makes the decoded metocean data available to users who wish to programmatically access it within their own applications.
