Client challenge
Our client, a renewables company in Japan, required an evaluation of 50 potential offshore sites for the development of a new offshore windfarm.
How we helped
We carried out a feasibility study to assess the ground conditions and wind resource. However, due to the nature of the geographical location, it was also essential to consider additional factors such as seismically induced liquefaction and typhoon risk around the Japanese coastline.
As the Japanese offshore wind market is in its infancy and with little offshore oil and gas assets, there is limited available knowledge of Japanese offshore marine conditions. This presented significant technical challenges and an increased degree of risk, but by embedding a team of LR experts, our client benefitted from their experience of having worked in analogous offshore environments around the world.
Powerful results
Our site assessment accurately identified the most appropriate site for the offshore wind farm. We combined our established methodologies, models and techniques with evaluation of local data and unique environmental factors to inform decision making.
