Ask the Expert - Electrical Surveys - Lindsay Butler
Description
Lindsay has been Principal Electrotechnical Surveyor for UK and Ireland since 2015 and is responsible for identifying and coordinating specialised Electrotechnical surveys and opportunities as well as marine technological developments within the region. He also delivers training courses and seminars on these subjects.
He has worked in the marine and offshore industries for the last 27 years and originally joined Lloyd’s Register in 1991 as a graduate electrical engineer. He has worked on many types of ship and offshore new construction and existing ship projects, including LNG, tanker, container ship, FPSO and all classes of Dynamic Positioning vessels globally. He is based in Glasgow but has previously worked in Korea, Canada, and Malaysia as well as various locations around the UK.
As well as his career with Lloyd’s Register, Lindsay has been a consultant in the oil and gas, defence and nuclear industries

Marine propulsion systems and technologies are evolving rapidly in response to changing economic and environmental pressures. These 4 Modules provides an overview of the main types of hybrid marine
propulsion systems, and how LR’s flexible design appraisal and survey processes can help you to prepare
for surveys, leading to increased operational efficiency. You’ll also learn how LR’s survey requirements
for more conventional marine electrical systems can form the basis for hybrid designs.

Description
I am a marine and offshore engineer and work as senior surveyor in charge of ESP section in LR Fleet Services. I have been with LR 12 years entering as a structural surveyor from a consultancy group. I designed and manage the Argonaut system for structural reporting of ship assessments. I manage a team of four surveyors who closely monitor the outcome of special surveys on ship’s structure. I have oversight of implementation of regulations, procedures and reporting requirements for the LR classed ESP fleet.
