Electrical: rig electrician programme.

The intermediate level Rig electrician programme (REP) forms part of the tri-level Lloyd's Register educational curriculum (introductory, intermediate and advanced) and is specifically aimed at drilling maintenance staff.

This International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) accredited programme is the next step for candidates who have completed the introductory Rig Electrical Course (REC) and all persons interested in further specializing as electricians in drilling departments.

You will learn

The aims of this programme are to:

  • Expose trainees to various types of equipment, operating procedures, compliance regulations, maintenance tasks and general rig electrical operations

  • Ensure a smooth transition into the drilling industry, in order to fulfil the role of a Rig Electrician

  • Ensure that Rig Electricians are familiar with the components, safe operation and maintenance of electrical systems on a drilling unit

  • Present the fundamental components of both land and offshore drilling rigs. Through the use of field-based exercises and assessments, trainees are challenged to apply new skills in relation to the identification, location, layout and functioning of rig electrical equipment

  • Use industry generic planned maintenance procedures to ensure that maintenance is carried out to the expected standard and that the systems are understood

Course content

The REP provides an extensive overview of many of the equipment configurations associated with drilling units, and ongoing learning is a key component of the programme.

The programme consists of both a theoretical and a practical component, split into two 5-day classroom sessions. Between the two sessions, trainees are required to complete tasks and practical assignments. Exams are taken at the end of each session to ensure competence in their chosen field.
