Well control: well control equipment course for surface rigs.


The Well control equipment course (WCEC) is an intermediate well control equipment course and has been specially developed for drilling personnel wishing to gain basic overall skills in well control on surface rigs.

Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will be able to:

  • Describe and explain the main components of well control equipment, including:Well control equipment mathematics

    • Ram-type BOPs (blowout preventers)

    • Annular-type BOPs

    • BOP-installed gate valves

    • Choke and kill manifold

    • BOP HPU (hydraulic power unit)

    • Conventional BOP control systems

    • Diverter systems

  • Explain the implication of standards (American Petroleum Institute - API, American Society of Mechanical Engineers - ASME, etc.) for maintenance, inspection and function and pressure testing of well control equipment

The topics covered during this course include:

  • The function, operation, inspection and the most frequent problems ofWell control equipment mathematics

    • ram preventers and locking systems

    • shear ram calculations

    • annular preventers

    • BOP gate valves

    • choke and kill manifolds

    • hydraulic control units

    • diverter systems

  • Norms and standards used in the drilling industry (such as API) and their implication for well control equipment

  • Analysis of the configuration and testing of choke and kill manifold

  • Safe working procedures and requirements for pressure testing of the BOP equipment

  • Recognizing symptoms that indicate malfunctions and the necessity of inspection, maintenance or repair of well control equipment

Course content

he 5-day course is based on interactive classes with ample time for group participation and discussion. It also includes:

  • Videos to explain operational and maintenance procedures

  • An entry test to evaluate attendees’ knowledge prior to the start of classroom sessions

  • A final exam at the end of the course, with a minimum passing score of 70%

Your future development

The Well Control Equipment Course (Surface rigs) is fully accredited by the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC).

Upon successful completion of the course, candidates receive an IADC accredited certificate of completion. This certificate is valid for five years.

This course is the second level our multi-level educational curriculum. Candidates who have successfully completed this training course and would like to extend their knowledge might also be interested in attending our advanced-level Deepwater Challenges Course.
