Our voice on offshore wind
During 7 years as O&M development lead at Lloyd’s Register (LR), Mark Spring has brought together teams of subject-matter experts from many fields, collaborated with wind farm operators, research institutions and academics, offering new consultancy services to improve information-transparency and add value through algorithms for optimising maintenance planning, vessel use, assessing turbine health, historical loading and risks of failure. Access to this information has helped improve efficiency and introduced operators to expertise LR has developed in the other industrial sectors. Mark is convenor of the international committee PT-28, which is writing the first edition of the technical specification IEC 61400-28 through life management and life extension of wind farms.
Prior to joining LR, Mark was Chief Engineer at Nordic Windpower, structural analyst in Alstom Ecotècnia’s Haliade design team in Barcelona in 2010, loads, mechanical, structural integrity of designs and non-conforming parts. At Garrad Hassan (GH) he worked in the areas of loads, software development and was a founder member of the machinery structures team. He lead GH participation in EU research projects such as ROTOW, ReliaWind and Wind Farms in Hostile Terrain. He joined GH after completing his doctorate in 1998.
