The FDA and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have launched a joint effort to protect consumers from the Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite, which has caused repeated outbreaks of foodborne illnesses linked to fresh produce in recent years.

The two agencies will collaborate in their preparations to address illnesses from Cyclospora and prevent an outbreak.

They will also work to identify data gaps and research requirements to develop better tools to detect, prevent and control the parasite.156
