The FDA has agreed to publish a list of foods deemed as high risk.

The FDA has agreed to publish a list of foods deemed as high risk by September 2020 and establish reporting requirements for those foods by November 2022.

The agency was compelled to commit to the deadlines after being sued by the non-profit organization Center for Food Safety.

High-risk foods are defined as those that are commonly recalled or produced in a way favorable to the development of harmful bacteria.

Once the list is published, companies that handle those foods will be required to keep better records in order to facilitate the identification of a contamination source in case of a foodborne illness outbreak.
