Brexit impact in relation to EU Recognised Organisation status

We are committed to helping our clients navigate challenges resulting from Brexit, regardless of the outcome of the negotiation process.

The UK and EU have yet to finalise the agreement for the UK to withdraw from the EU. Through our involvement and strong relationships with flag administrations we are able to stay closely involved with developments.

General updates

In the marine sector, we are a EU Recognised Organisation (RO) and are currently required to be sponsored by a EU member State (for the purposes of ensuring compliance with Regulation (EC) No 391/2009, Article 8, paragraph 1, dealing with continued proficiency to act as an RO). We previously gained this sponsorship through the United Kingdom.

Over the past couple of months the European Commission has been working on the amendments to the Regulation and Directive to simplify the approach by removing the requirement for a sponsor. The Commission's proposals are currently undergoing consultation with the legislative bodies of the EU and these should be adopted in time for the UK’s departure from the EU. With this amendment LR will automatically continue to enjoy its recognition post-Brexit.
