Brexit impact in relation to EU Recognised Organisation status

We are committed to providing our clients continuity of service regardless of the outcome of the negotiation process and are taking all necessary actions to ensure this.

The UK and EU have yet to finalise the agreement for the UK to withdraw from the EU. Through our involvement and strong relationships with Flag Administrations we are able to stay closely involved with developments.

General updates

In the marine sector, we are a EU Recognised Organisation (RO) and are required to be sponsored by a EU Flag (for the purposes of ensuring compliance with Regulation (EC) No 391/2009, Article 8, paragraph 1, dealing with continued proficiency to act as an RO). We previously gained this sponsorship through the United Kingdom, but in May 2017, we agreed with the Danish Maritime Authority to have its sponsorship moved from the UK to Denmark, thereby assuring our ability to continue to act as a EU RO post-Brexit.

Marine Classification Societies with Recognised Organisation status, based in Non-EU Member States, have also been required to obtain sponsorship by an EU Flag outside of the country where they are principally based (in order to ensure compliance with the Regulation).

Although choice of the sponsoring Flag lies with the RO, we have agreed with the UK and Denmark that switching of sponsorship will be finalised in line with the result of Brexit negotiations. In the meantime, we are involving both the UK and Denmark in any EU RO related discussions.

Denmark has formally advised the Commission of the agreement to take on the sponsorship role, which the Commission has acknowledged.
