Client challenge

A subsea blow-out preventer (BOP) is a special offshore system that is highly regulated. It is among one of the few pieces of equipment that combines multiple functions. A BOP is a tool for controlling drilling and operations, preventing risk and supporting emergency response procedures. It is often the final line of defence for protecting life and the environment.

Our client, operating a deepwater drill ship, wanted to demonstrate a transparent, well-structured, risk assessment approach. This included careful monitoring of its BOP safety performance.

How we helped

We put a team on board the drill unit to maintain continuity with BOP compliance. Our knowledge of this important component, including in the Gulf of Mexico, and rig integrity helped provide confidence in how risk was being managed for deepwater drilling and well exploration.

Although the core part of our work was on BOP operation, rig integrity and compliance, we also provided support with maintenance and asset management. Our scope of activities included performing inspections and risk assessment, delivering training for personnel working on the rig and providing continuation of support for the drilling campaign.

Results and benefits

By running a recommendation summary, all findings were continually addressed and closed. This allowed us to track and trend deficiencies effectively. The project proved a model example of how collaborations between organisations can lead to innovative risk and reliability work – helping to make the industry more reliable, productive and safer.

Key benefits:

  • no recorded downtime to date, including for the last six months KPI for this project

  • assured compliance with relevant regulations (BSEE)

  • significantly reduced risk of downtime by increasing system reliability.
