Searching for a integrated offshore project management tool

DeepOcean is a primary offshore contractor specialising in submarine cable installation and trenching projects in the UK and overseas. This competitive market demands optimal project performance and efficiency, with close monitoring of critical metrics like trenching speed, plough tow force and depth of burial during offshore operations.

DeepOcean wanted its onshore project teams to have clear, real-time access to offshore operational positioning, survey and trenching data so they could quickly identify any operational or technical issues that might require intervention or project planning optimisation. It also wanted to independently store information so it could review and replay trenching performance data, vessel movements and metocean observations to support project variations.

Already a user of LR IRIS, DeepOcean wanted to integrate this new real-time data with its existing project web maps to add context from regional and local soils data, bathymetry, gradients and metocean data. The new system would provide a truly integrated offshore project management tool.

Our response

Bringing geospatial data together with real-time performance information

Through IRIS's web mapping site, DeepOcean can securely access a wide range
of geospatial datasets relevant to offshore operations. Those include hydrographic charts, bathymetry, BGS soils and sample data, offshore infrastructure and metocean observations, predictions and forecasts. IRIS also incorporates vessel tracking using a range of proprietary and third party data sources.

LR's ruggedized V-NODE unit automatically collects on-board positioning and trenching performance data, then packages and transmits it to the IRIS cloud database platform using vessel VSAT or in-built Iridium satellite communications. V-NODE also incorporates internal GPS, heading and AIS sensors. This allows live monitoring via IRIS of all vessel movements in the vicinity of operations, fully independent of terrestrial or satellite AIS.

With input from DeepOcean's technical team, LR created a suite of IRIS dashboards within a dedicated "Trenching Status" module. Data including depth of burial, plough speed and tow force is plotted in series against time or KP and viewed across multiple passes or campaigns.

DeepOcean can directly download data from the IRIS website for detailed analysis within Excel and other applications. LR enhanced IRIS's vessel tracking functionality so it can identify, store and replay an unlimited number of vessels during a project without affecting system performance.

The benefits

Shared intelligence drives more efficient operational performance

DeepOcean has now implemented LR's IRIS service across numerous submarine cable projects to support both planning and operational phases. The latest V-NODE unit links to vessel systems to support the T3200 trencher, sharing data with onshore teams that was previously confined to onboard systems during operations.

Using IRIS, DeepOcean can now quickly identify operational and performance issues, with earlier intervention helping to improve overall project efficiency. Any authorized user with an internet-enabled mobile or desktop device can tap this single source of cloud-hosted individual and multi-project data at any time. Onshore and offshore teams can use common datasets to collaborate, improving problem solving and technical support.

With this database, DeepOcean can replay project activities, trenching performance and vessel movements. Based upon this actual field performance data, it can enhance scheduling and forecasting for upcoming operations. IRIS also forms a permanent, independent record of trenching asset performance within identified soil types and metocean conditions, improving scheduling and costing for future tenders and projects.

When the IRIS/V-NODE solution is deployed, the offshore and onshore teams can work efficiently, sharing the same data. It also supports our project team in forecasting and planning
