Client Challenge
AW-Energy (AWE), a leader in near shore wave energy in Finland, wanted to push the boundaries of wave energy by creating an emissions free renewable source of energy that gave positive financial returns and was commercially viable. The WaveRoller™ is a device that converts ocean waves into electricity. It has been anchored to the seabed in Peniche, Portugal at a depth of 20m where it captures the kinetic energy using a hinged panel that runs a bespoke in-house that is connected to the onshore electrical grid. It is a novel, emission-free renewable source of energy that has a low visual impact.
AW Energy needed to accurately address and identify areas of risk and uncertainty and ensure that their stakeholders were assured that the technology would perform as specified.
How we helped
Together with AWE, we used our extensive experience in Technology Qualifications to define the goals they wanted to achieve in terms of performance and reliability, identified
the risks and challenges in achieving them and created a plan to provide evidence that the goals had been satisfied to an acceptable level of risk. Essentially, we worked together every step of the way through design, manufacture, testing and assembly. The whole process included workshops, frequent progress meetings, inspections and surveys on
site as and when required. At LR we understand that plans change and we were able to constantly adapt the process to facilitate the changes required, while not compromising
safety and the integrity of the project.
Powerful results
We awarded a Technology Qualification Certificate, qualifying the technology. This included a Manufacturing Certificate that ensured the WaveRoller was built to the desired quality and specification and a Prototype Certificate for its Assembly. We’re thrilled to say that WaveRoller™ was successfully deployed in Peniche in December 2019 and has been providing electricity to the grid ever since. We look forward to working with AWE in upscaling their design in the future.
